I hope I can get some help from out there. On eof my marketing classes here at Georgetown has assigned me the task of finding who buys these small-to-medium sized tractors. Does anybody have an idea what sort of job requires this size of vehicle? What projects would you use it for--small farms, golf courses, winter retreats? Would it be used to mow, bale, dig, seed, plant, plow, or what? What sort of attachments/options would it have? Four-speed or automatic? Four-wheel drive or just two? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

In most of the world it is probably a matter of sizing the tractor to the farm.The farms are not large, but they may be in a confined area or steep slopes.The compact tractor is good for these conditions. Also, the compact tractors are incrediably fuel efficient. Not that we care ortalk about it much in the US, but these small tractors will work at light loadsall day on about a gallon of diesel fuel!! For much of the world I wouldimagine that this is important. Any engineer will look at the compact diesels and can tell you that this wasNOT a machine designed for the consumer market. It is way over-designed for consumer use. Even the small ones are industrial quality. So I doubt that the machine was designed for the US market. Look at the lawn and garden mowing tractors: they WERE designed for the US market. Now take a close look at the diffferences between the US designed lawn and garden tractors and the compactdiesels. A real eye-opener Uh...Oh...look at the price difference, too. There is a large and growing group of people in the US known as the "hobbyfarmers" or "weekenders". We own an acre or twenty and like to work the land asa hobby. For relaxation. Might even have a few horses or such. We have found thatthe compact diesels fill a need on our small acreages. Notice that in the US wealmost always want a loader on our tractor. But that the imported tractors are almost never built with that in mind. Grey market tractors come with tillagetools, rarely loaders. The loaders are added in this country. Just more evidencethat we are buying a tool that was really developed for a different purpose. Onecompany that has realized this is New Holland. Their "Boomer" series is aimedright at the small acreage hobby farmer............Roger L. ....

I LIVE IN WESTERN PA. THERE ARE A LOT OF FARMS HERE THEY ALL HAVE A TRACTOR OR TWO ABOUT THIS SIZE. THESE ARE USED FOR CLEANING DAIRY STALLS, GENERAL LOADER WORK, IT IS NOT THE SIZE OF THE TRACTOR BUT THE IMPLEMENTS IT LETS YOU USE.THESE TRACTORS HAVE A CATAGORY 1 THREE POINT HITCH,WHICH ALLOWS GREAT VERSITILITY IN THE JOBS THAT THEY CAN DO.I HAVE A 23HP NEW HOLLAND 4WD. IT WILL RUN A LOADER, BACKHOE,5 FT BRUSH CUTTER,POSTHOLE DIGGER, GENERATOR AND SNOW PLOW.I AM A PROFESSIONAL, NOT A FARMER, I ENJOY DOING MY OWN PROPERTY MAINTENECE,AND HAVE ABOUT 27 ACRES OF WOODS AND GRASS THAT I MAINTAIN. I COULD NOT DO THISWITHOUT THE TRACTOR, MY WIFE IS ALSO VERY ADEPT AT USING THE MACHINE FOR HEAVYTASKS.I HAVE TWO FRIENDS, ONE IN THE OIL BUSINESS, THE OTHER A PROFESSIONAL, THEY BOTH OWN SIMILAR MACHINES FOR SIMILAR PURPOSES. WE AL LIVE IN RURAL TO VERY RURAL AREAS, THESE MACHINES ARE TRUE WORK HORSES NOT TOYS.THEY ARE BUILT JUST LIKE THEIR BIGGER BROTHERS,AND THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF ATTACHMENTS FOR THESE TRACTORS.THERE VERSATITLITY IS UNBELIEVABLE.ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF IN AGRICULTURE, LANDSCAPING, INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONSCAN BE DONE WITHE THESE TRACTORS ON A SMALLER SCALE.I HAVE SEEN THESE TRACTORS WITH A LOADER AND A DECK THAT ATTACHES TO THE 3PT HITCH BE USED AS MOBILE WELDING PLATFORMS IN INDUSTRIAL SETTINGS.THE MORE YOU USE ONE THE MORE YOU REALIZE HOW VERSATILE THEY ARE. ....

JJ,Al and RogerL are right on in their comments. I believe you would be suprisedat how powerful a "horsepower" is on a compact diesel tractor. I have a 14.5 hp(as measured on the PTO, since this is the point at which attachments are driven)with a loader, 5 ft mower, 50 inch rototiller, and post hole digger. I previouslyhad a gas 27 hp lawn/garden tractor that was a toy compared to this machine. I am an engineer that enjoys using the tractor for general use around my property- landscaping, soil conditioning, pulling small trees, hauling, mowing. It would be plenty big enough and reliable enough to do these things as a business. In thelarger horsepower range you reference, the tractors get large enough to worksmall to medium size farms. They will do all the jobs you list and more. I'd recommend you visit the websites from John Deere, Ford, Massey Ferguson, etc.and see what they advertise as uses and look at the attachments available.Good Luck,Gene ....

I just purchased a 1984 International 244. It is a 3cyl diesel PTO HP 21. AlthoughI haven't used it much yet I intend to use it for property maintenance, light landscaping, mowing, and shelterbelt tillage on our 20 acres here in Helena, Montana.I am a full time electrician and only part time hobby-farmer.For a tractor its size I cannot believe the # of features it has common to large tractors.(Cat 1 hitch, live 540 or 1250 PTO,two stage clutch, draft control, aux hydraulics at rear,Farmall Dunham-Lier quick detach loader, four wheel drive, 3 sp trans w/ high med low range,foot and lever throttle control,lights, tach, hr meter) As already mentioned,these machines are suprisingly well built and powerfull for their size. I intendto purchase a tiller, post-hole digger, and brush hog later. Also, I am curioushow well it will perform compared to an 8n and 600-800 series old Fords. (My dadhas three of them.) Like many others I started out thinking that a super gardentractor would work. After doing some research and seeing what the compact dieselscan do I am awed by their superiority over the high power mowing tractors. Because usedtractors this size in good shape are hard to come by here - lots of 8ns, but nothing with"big" tractor features - I traveled 500 miles round trip to get this one. Hopefully the compact dieselwill catch on and their prices will come down some. ....
